BUYING GUIDES

What Diaspora Buyers Should Know Before Purchasing Property in Lagos

Buying property in Lagos while living abroad is more common than many people realize. Whether it's for family, retirement, or long-term investment, managing a purchase from a different time zone, currency, and legal system understandably raises questions a local buyer wouldn't have to think about.

Verify before you commit, not after

The single most important step is confirming that a property's title documentation is genuine and free of dispute before any money changes hands. This matters for any buyer, but it matters more when you can't easily visit the property or the relevant land registry office yourself. Work with an advisor who can conduct this verification on your behalf and explain the findings plainly, not just confirm that "it's fine."

A few things worth asking about upfront:

Currency and timing

Properties in Lagos are sometimes listed in Naira and sometimes in US Dollars, depending on the specific property. Whichever currency a listing uses, make sure you understand exactly how that figure is being converted at the time of your transaction, not just at the time you first saw the listing.

You don't need to be physically present for every step

A well-run purchase process should let you review documents, ask questions, and make decisions remotely, with in-person visits reserved for steps that genuinely require them, such as final inspections or signings. If a process seems to require your physical presence more often than that, it's worth asking why.

Buying property in Lagos from abroad is achievable when the right questions are asked early. The goal is simple: you should feel as informed about the decision as someone viewing the property in person.
